We farm a smallholding in gorgeous S.E Cornwall, breeding our pedigree Large Black Pigs in a natural outdoor environment to the highest welfare standards. This gives them a happy life, reared in family groups and forming a natural rotation cycle within our vegetable plots. They forage for hazelnuts and acorns and all manner of piggy goodies in the woods and fields, which all adds to the fantastic flavour and terrific crackling of the Large Black Pig.
Where are we?
Florrick Down Farm is situated on the Rame peninsula, on the Devon and Cornwall Border. This means that Florrick is ideally situated to serve hog roasts and other catering needs all over Cornwall and Devon.
What do we do?
We started doing hog roasts and have now expanded to include chicken and lamb menus as well as vegetarian, fish and even game. Homemade canapés and deserts and vegetarian options make for an affordable catering package for your event, party or wedding.
Florrick raises its own Large Black and Saddle Back pigs for the hog roasts. We grow a variety of salads, herbs and more to be used at our catering events (be they weddings or parties) throughout Cornwall and Devon. Although not certified organic by any organisation, Florrick does practice highly ethical standards of care for it’s animals.
No teeth testicles or tails are removed from our pigs! They get to live outside and get to rub their noses in the dirt, ensuring our hog roasts use happy pigs. Chickens get to live free range, as do the ducks and geese.
We do not use chemicals, we buy organic seeds etc in producing our veg or herbs and are happy to answer questions about our production systems. We are a very small farm working without a tractor, vegetables are all sown by hand weeded by hand and harvested by hand. Our polytunnels grow veg for events, parties, and weddings meaning that the produce used is fresh and tasty.
Our sausages, chickens, summer veg and pork are very popular and we provide fresh produce for the local community and its visitors.
Our Hog Roasts
We can supply you with an outstanding Spit Roast, which brings together all of the love and care we put into the farm and delivers it to your private party, wedding or corporate event. Our spit roast machine is the Rolls-Royce of machines, looking stylish whilst slowly turning one of our pedigree pigs in front of your guests on a gas fired spit, producing the most wonderful mouth-watering aroma. Our chef and assistants are on hand to take all the worry out of your function, and to provide polite courteous service with a smile. Emphasis is put on bringing you only the freshest salads and accompaniments and to be flexible when it comes to your needs and wishes.
Our Pork and Poultry
Our delicious pork and sausages are sold from our farm gate, on the Rame Peninsula, with our first class sausages being the best we have tasted, made by our master butcher. We also have free range chickens from which we sell eggs and our wonderful table birds, slow reared for at least 86 days on our south facing slopes producing proper old fashioned chicken that our great-grandparents would have been proud of. The difference in taste and texture between our birds and pigs and ordinarily farmed animals is just incredible and that’s why we do it.
We also rear geese for the Christmas period and this year shall be raising 50 birds. These are free to roam over our paddocks and graze the lush grass.
Our ducks are mainly Aylesburys, again producing fabulous meat and lots of large eggs. The younger birds sit around our large duck pond whilst the older birds free-range on our tranquil hillside.
We have two polytunnels producing salads all year round and wonderful tomatoes and summer veg. Our smallholding also accommodates 1 ½ acres of very fertile vegetable plots in which we produce vegetables for our vegetable box scheme. We do not use pesticides or herbicides and grow organically, utilising keen volunteer workers to help weed and keep on top of things. Our whole ethos is one of sustainability, and we strive to produce food for the local community at a fair price whilst benefiting the environment.
Florrick has a large network of producers in Cornwall and Devon meaning that Florrick has access to the best local produce. Becaue of this our ingredients are second to none, accompanying our own amazing produce.
Florrick ensures that anything they cannot produce themselves is sourced locally and/or organic whenever possible. Supporting the local community and economy is an integral part of what Florrick does. We source cheese from all over Cornwall and Devon, Gourmet miniature Cornish pasties, Lamb from Bodmin moor and many more local ingredients.
Bread is baked on the day of the event meaning your guests get to enjoy fresh bread with their food, whether its hog roast, lamb or chicken.
Cornwall and Devon have a wonderful selection of producers that Florrick uses to purchase food directly from wherever possible. The catering is varied and adapted to personal needs. Canapés are homemade by people living in Cornwall, not bought pre-packed. This is also true of our vegetarian options, sauces, bread etc.—all made in Cornwall using Cornish or Devonshire ingredients as much as possible.
Weddings with a local theme give good value for money. Florrick offers catering on a budget whilst still offering class and quality. Adapting a personal menu for all your guests to read, they will know what they are eating and where it was produced, adding something special for your wedding. Our care and attention to detail will ensure your day is special.
